The way I remember the story was that Lovecraft didn't go into much detail of how the this Whateley looked other than he was invisible and about the size of a barn. How did you form your idea of this look?
I saw a description of it in Wikipedia: "...An invisible egg-shaped monster of a gelatinous consistence, covered in tentacled suckers and "feet like hogsheads", with a mostly human face." I wanted to see if there were any pics on this site...yay! This is so awesome...I won't sleep tonight.
Had a dream similar to this guy, only it's legs were tiny mouths and its body was shiny red/black. It was bigger than buildings and eating anything that lived, knocking everything over... Creepy stuff.
“I dun’t keer what folks think—ef Lavinny’s boy looked like his pa, he wouldn’t look like nothin’ ye expeck. Ye needn’t think the only folks is the folks hereabaouts. Lavinny’s read some, an’ has seed some things the most o’ ye only tell abaout. I calc’late her man is as good a husban’ as ye kin find this side of Aylesbury; an’ ef ye knowed as much abaout the hills as I dew, ye wouldn’t ast no better church weddin’ nor her’n. Let me tell ye suthin’—some day yew folks’ll hear a child o’ Lavinny’s a-callin’ its father’s name on the top o’ Sentinel Hill!”
Oh my O_o I'd hate to see that thing lumbering towards me! Fantastic rendering You have the unerring ability to both show a shambling horror clearly and yet not lose one whit of its power, otherworldliness and fright -- Why is a raven like a writing desk?
